Sacred Alliance for Grassroots Equality

Our Mission
SAGE Council is an Indigenous and people of color-led organization using community organizing to build power through action, education, leadership development and political participation. Our commitment to social change and self-determination is based in spirituality that honors Mother Earth and all peoples.

History

SAGE Council has been on the forefront of the battle to protect our cultural resources while encouraging Albuquerque to utilize our tax dollars to enhance the overall quality of life for all citizens.

A cornerstone of our debate is the protection of the Petroglyph National Monument.  The Monument is a Native American sacred site that is being threatened by the construction of two major freeways.  These freeways would fast-track an enormous amount of development on the far Westside of Albuquerque. Through our efforts to protect the Petroglyphs SAGE Council has become deeply involved in development issues such as: transportation, planning & zoning, and tax issues.  We’ve seen how people of color are unwittingly disenfranchised by unplanned development and sprawl.

Our struggle has led to becoming an integral part of the overall success in controlling growth.  We have sought meaningful participation of Native Americans, low income families, and other people of color in our struggles to implement a sustainable and equitable quality of life.

Included in our success is the Native American Voters Alliance which has become a promising facet of our efforts to instill a higher degree of accountability from political and institutional leaders who serve our community.
